What is the life expectancy of the RFID marker?

Minimum 30 years based on existing product experience to date. 3M has extensive experience with this type of product and has sold over 25 million electronic markers worldwide so far.

Does the technology deteriorate over time?

There has been no evidence to suggest this. Data life validation tests project data will be retained for over 200 years.

Will the RFID chip deteriorate once in the ground due to the magnetic fields given off by electric/power cables?

The chips are not affected by magnetic fields

Do the markers need batteries? How long do they last?

The markers don’t use batteries – They are totally passive and don't "run out"

What is the marker's operating frequency? Are these legal?

The products are legally compliant and are CE marked. The frequency is 66 KHz for the recommended General Purpose marker type.

What is the locator's power output?

For marker locating the locators have a signal power output of 0.5W.

How long do the locator's batteries last? Can I use rechargeable batteries?

Use of the recommended eight AA size, alkaline 1.5V batteries will provide typical battery life of 25 hours. Rechargeable equivalents may be used, however because their voltage is 1.2V each and their mAh ratings vary, we cannot predict what the typical battery life would be.

How deep can I bury the markers?

Maximum of 1.2m trench depth if using the recommended General Purpose marker ball type, other markers available from 3M for either shallower or deeper applications. Markers are ideally attached to a utility using cable ties, please see the 3M marker burial instructions for more details.

What are the effects of water and metal on the markers?

Water has no effect. Metal in close proximity can affect the marker read range. Please see our installation process for more details.
